The striking emerald shimmer of these beetles makes them appear as jewels amongst the dull gray bark of the Ash tree, however their beauty is deceitful. These shiny gems have been responsible for the destruction of tens of millions of trees across 26 states within the U.S., including Pennsylvania.
What are Emerald Ash Borers?
These destructive pests are native to Asia. It is thought that they migrated to North America through wood packing material. The adult beetles are metallic green and are about 1/2-inch long. The Emerald Ash Borer or EAB attacks only ash trees, leaving a D-shaped exit hole in the bark when they emerge in spring.
What Can I do?
In addition to the D-shaped beetle exit holes, infested trees will show yellow, thin or wilted foliage. You may also notice shoots growing from roots or a tree’s trunk, often with larger-than-normal leaves. Additionally, woodpeckers like EAB larvae. Unusual woodpecker activity or heavy woodpecker damage on ash trees may be a sign of infestation.
